HYGIENE APPOINTMENTS

KWC Family dentistry

Keeping up with your oral hygiene is important for many reasons. Regular cleaning appointments can help you attain and maintain good oral health. Hygienists not only clean and examine teeth, gums, and your tongue, but they also look out for signs of inflammation or abnormalities that could be harmful.

Oral hygiene appointments can aid in the prevention of tooth loss and oral disease. At your cleaning appointments, your hygienist will recommend taking x-rays when necessary to find cavities in your teeth, determine your bone levels, and to find any signs of infection. They will also polish teeth to remove stains, apply fluoride to strengthen teeth, and apply fissure sealants to seal grooves for decay prevention.

A dentist will also examine your teeth and provide you with direction and next steps if there are signs of issues that may require treatment. You can also expect your hygienist to educate you throughout your visit to show you what you can do to improve and maintain your oral health at home.

FILLINGS

Fillings restore teeth that have been damaged by decay. The decayed part of the tooth is removed, and the tooth is then disinfected and reconstructed. The lost tooth structure is replaced with a filling material to restore the tooth’s natural shape and function. The filling material closes space and seals off the remaining tooth structure, limiting the chance that bacteria can re-enter, thus preventing further decay in that area. During an examination at your cleaning appointment and through x-rays, a dentist will determine and inform you when you require a filling.

ROOT CANALS

What is a root canal?

A root canal is when an untreated cavity has progressed and spread down to the centre of the tooth, then continues into the roots of the tooth. Leaving a root canal untreated can result in further spread of the disease, where it can reach and destroy bone and the surrounding periodontal (gum) tissues.

What are the symptoms?

Some common symptoms of teeth requiring root canal treatment include:

KWC Rootcanaltherapy
  • Sensitivity or pain when consuming foods or liquids

  • Sharp pain as a result of temperature changes

  • Pain in a general area, not necessarily in one tooth

  • Pain that wakes you up at night

  • Tooth discolouration or darkening

Procedure

Typical root canal therapy involves the disinfection of the roots of an infected tooth. The roots are then sealed off to prevent further spread of the disease. At our offices, patients can choose to have local anaesthesia for this procedure or be sedated.

ORAL CANCER SCREENINGS

Oral cancer screenings are conducted for patients at our offices on an annual basis, as well as for first visits. A practitioner will conduct a thorough examination of the head and neck in search of signs of inflammation of the lymph nodes which can be suggestive of oral cancer. The practitioner will also examine the most high-risk sites in the mouth, such as the lateral tongue, and the floor of the mouth. In compliance with the most modern standards of preventative oral healthcare, oral cancer screenings should be done on a routine basis. This is because your primary care physician may screen all other areas of the body for cancer, but may not consider the involvement of the oral tissues. The first signs of cancer sometimes present themselves in the mouth, so it is vital that assessments are occurring regularly. Call to book your oral cancer screening today.

BRUXISM

KWC Dental Nightguard

If you grind your teeth at night, you may have bruxism. Bruxism can cause enamel wear, discolouration, and pain. This condition is widespread amongst all age groups and is a very common finding in many patients. To treat bruxism, we take impressions of the teeth to fabricate and prescribe a night guard to be worn when you sleep so that the enamel is not worn down further.
